Top 5 Mistakes Beginners Make When Using Soft Plastic Baits

Top 5 Mistakes Beginners Make When Using Soft Plastic Baits

Soft plastic baits are one of the most versatile tools in a bass angler’s tackle box—but using them effectively takes a little know-how.

Here are the top 5 mistakes beginners make when using soft plastics, and how to avoid them.

1. Choosing the Wrong Color for Water Conditions

A common mistake is grabbing the flashiest color on the shelf without considering the water clarity. In muddy water, brighter colors like chartreuse or white can help bass see your bait. In clear water, natural tones like Pumpkin Seed or Watermelon Red Flake (like our Pond Wands) tend to get more bites. Match the hatch and the water.

2. Using the Wrong Weight for the Situation

Too heavy, and your bait rockets past the strike zone. Too light, and it never gets there. Match your weight to the depth and cover you’re fishing. Our Up-Shots are available in both 1/2 oz and 3/16 oz sizes—perfect for dialing in the right fall rate whether you're finesse fishing a drop shot or punching through heavier cover.

3. Setting the Hook Too Soon (or Too Late)

New anglers often yank the hook the second they feel a bite—or worse, wait too long. The key is to feel the pressure and then set the hook with a firm, confident motion. Practicing your timing can make all the difference.

4. Not Rigging the Bait Properly

Crooked baits twist in the water and don’t look natural. Make sure your soft plastic is straight on the hook and rigged for the technique you’re using—Texas, Carolina, wacky, or Ned. A poorly rigged bait means fewer bites.

5. Giving Up Too Soon

Sometimes, it takes a few casts—or a few dozen—to find the right rhythm. Beginners often get discouraged and switch baits or spots too quickly. Patience is a big part of the game. Stick with it, make adjustments, and learn from every cast.
